Autumn - the time of separation; Archangel Michael comes to separate the soul from the body
Every year, when the Sun enters the sign of Libra, it is autumn, the season of ripened fruit. Archangel Michael, who dominates this equinoctial point, is always depicted holding a pair of scales, which he uses to weigh souls. Just as the fruit separates from the tree, as the seed separates from the fruit, so the soul separates from the body. Autumn is the time of separation that Hermes Trismegistus speaks of: ‘You will separate the subtle from the gross with great diligence.’ You will separate the subtle from the gross, also meaning the spiritual from the material. In the autumn, the process of separation, of sorting, takes place throughout nature to prepare for new life. And just as Archangel Michael comes to separate the soul from the body by letting the body die, Initiates also let some matter die within themselves so as to release true life.
