Spiritual Master - the greater he is, the more demanding is his teaching

What do disciples usually look for in a Master? Someone who is all-knowing and all-powerful, who makes their life easy and solves all their problems. Well, they will have to think again; this is not what a Master is there for. A Master is there to teach them and to urge them to improve themselves, and the greater the Master, the more rigorous his teaching. This is a law which is borne out in all spheres of life. The teaching of a brilliant musician or scholar is only within reach of a small number of people, which is why they accept only a very few pupils. You may say that a spiritual Master is neither a musician nor a scholar, and that his love, goodness and generosity embrace all creatures. Yes, this is true, but his love, goodness and generosity will not motivate him to perform for you all the miracles you are expecting. Quite the opposite, he will be exacting, even severe, in order to ceaselessly stimulate you on the path to perfection.
