If you tell our contemporaries that faith, hope, and love will help them solve their problems, they will not listen to you. To resolve their problems, they rely more on science, new techniques, insurance policies, law courts, and so on. Well, they will eventually find out whether science, modern techniques, insurance policies and the courts will bring them definitive solutions... I am not saying that we should return to the past and reject all innovations. If the universal spirit that directs the evolution of living things has allowed mankind to develop in this way, it is for a reason: it considers these experiences necessary. Humanity must pass this way, and once it has completed the experience, it will turn back to the Creator, enriched by all it has gained. Human beings, created 'in the image of God', must develop themselves in every sense in order to resemble God one day. And before they can resemble God, their faith, hope, and love must be put to the test of matter with all its snares and seductions.
