It is astonishing sometimes to see the idea some people …
It is astonishing sometimes to see the idea some people have of themselves – it bears no relation at all to reality, which is why they never understand what happens to them. Nothing is more important than the gaining of real self-knowledge, knowledge of one’s qualities and faults, abilities and weaknesses. It is the first condition for success and for harmonious relations with other creatures; otherwise complications and shocks will inevitably ensue. We can even observe that most of the accidents and tragedies that occur in the world are due to a lack of self-knowledge. Knowing who you are, what you represent, what you are or aren’t capable of – these are precisely the areas where you constantly risk deceiving yourself. And it’s very serious, that’s where all dangers lie; everything you do, all your undertakings and associations with others, run the risk of failure if you have not based them on a clear understanding of yourself.
