It is by observing how people cope in the face of adversity …

It is by observing how people cope in the face of adversity that we can truly know others and discover whether they are loyal, truthful, strong, wise, or generous. When everything is going their way, when nothing is troubling them or causing them to suffer, it is impossible to know people's true worth. This is why initiates always begin by preparing several minor trials for those who present themselves, asking to become disciples. An initiate is very difficult to win over, and rightly so. He will not let you into his heart, his soul, or his spirit right away, before he has checked you out, because he cannot afford to risk placing all his riches in a vessel which may leak. But if he sees that the vessel is sound, that even in the midst of storms the disciple proves himself to be steady, strong, and patient then – and only then – the initiate gives him everything he has: his trust, his love, his esteem, his treasures
