Here is a story I read a long, long time ago. One day some initiates sent their disciples to a deserted island to clear it and develop it. ‘When you have finished your task,’ they told them, ‘a bell will announce our arrival.’ The disciples set to work immediately, and soon the island became a real paradise. The bell, however, did not ring. They continued to work, but still they heard nothing. They thought for a long time, and suddenly the light dawned on them: they had forgotten to build an altar to the Divinity. They immediately undertook its construction… The moment it was finished, the bell sounded, and the initiates solemnly arrived and placed on the forehead of each disciple a luminous pentagram, the symbol of the spiritual virtues. The story teaches us that, whatever we accomplish on earth, we will have completed our task only when we have built an altar within us to the Lord, in other words, when we have succeeded in manifesting the five virtues of the pentagram: love, wisdom, truth, goodness and justice.
