It is very difficult to make the distinction between good …

It is very difficult to make the distinction between good and evil in our everyday lives, to see exactly where one ends and the other begins, for they are inextricably intermingled. This is why the Emerald Tablet says, ‘You shall separate the subtle (good) from the gross (evil) with great industry.’ Evil clings to good in order to draw strength from it; and good adheres to, and feeds on, evil. Good has the right to do this, just as a plant has the right to draw nourishment from the soil in which it grows; in doing so it is obeying the laws of creation and life. But the soil does not have the right to draw strength from a plant.
