It is said in the scriptures that ‘the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’. To understand this notion properly, one should begin by distinguishing between fearing and feeling afraid. Feeling afraid is an instinct which comes from the physiological depths of one’s being and may have no objective basis. Fearing, however, has a mental dimension: when you fear something or someone, you know why. According to what is written, it is fear of the Lord, rather than feeling afraid of the Lord, that is the beginning of wisdom. We must not be afraid of the Lord. He does not wish us any harm, quite the opposite. But we should fear not respecting his laws. This fear, then, is a consequence of understanding that the universe that God created obeys sovereign laws and that when we transgress these laws we only harm ourselves, for in doing so we contradict the cosmic order.
