Meditation is first of all an exercise in concentration: the mind’s energy must be focused on a given point, on a goal to be achieved. This goal can be an individual one, but it can also be a collective one. Ideally, it will be both at once. If you forget yourself completely and think only of others, how to help, support and comfort them, you will exhaust yourself, and soon you will have no more strength to continue your work. And if you are totally preoccupied with yourself, you run the risk of getting into conflict with other members of your community: you will forget you are only a small part of a whole, with which you need reasonable, harmonious exchanges if you are to maintain a balance, and you will encounter obstacles and receive shocks. In our spiritual life, as in our social life, true wisdom teaches us to bring the two together: to work for ourselves, for our own development, and at the same time to work for others, by mentally sending them the love, light and peace we have succeeded in attracting to ourselves.
