Success - difficulty in knowing to whom it is due

How many men and women have died for an ideal seemingly without having achieved their aim. But their example provided the impulse for a vast number of people; they were like seeds, like a leaven. And then, one day, their aim is achieved and beyond what they had hoped. And so those who know success should be grateful to all the men and women who have worked before them to make their success possible. Those people made sacrifices and were sometimes even casualties, but they might come back in another life to reap the fruit of their labours. Historians are unaware of the previous lives of the people they study. This is why, when they declare that so-and-so succeeded where someone else failed, they can be mistaken – their successes and failures are all determined by their previous incarnations.
