Although tolerance is a quality of the heart, it is strongly influenced by the mind. Only someone who is truly intelligent can be tolerant. Why? Because when we really begin to understand what a human being is, the various factors which constitute his deeper nature, the influences that life conditions can have on his behaviour, the difficulties he is up against, we cannot judge him too harshly, even though he may behave badly. We remain lucid, because lucidity is in fact one of the attributes of the mind, but we are also more understanding. Those who possess certain qualities of the heart but who are narrow-minded and unintelligent can quickly become harsh, intolerant, and merciless. Nothing reveals a lack of intelligence more clearly than the absence of tolerance, which is a lack of understanding.
