People expect a spiritual master to make spectacular …
People expect a spiritual master to make spectacular revelations, but he does not do so, for he knows not only how difficult it is to reveal the truth but how few people are ready to hear it. And even those who do want to hear it rarely have the strength to tolerate it. A master is always revealing the truth, of course, but by this we mean the laws and methods which enable the disciple to do a great work on himself and, as a result of this preparatory work, to gain access to the truth. Otherwise, what happens? First, there are those who cannot understand, no matter what you say to them, and this is a waste of the master’s time. Then there are those who misunderstand and unconsciously use this truth to harm others and themselves. Finally there are those who refuse to accept the truth because it disturbs them: it goes against what they consider their own interests. Yes, he who wants to reveal the truth to people exposes himself to a great deal of misunderstanding.
