In chemistry, the product of an acid and a base is known as a salt. The acid is an active, dynamic substance which can be identified as the masculine principle, and the base is a passive, receptive substance which can be identified as the feminine principle. In the presence of an acid, the base reacts by producing a salt. Salt is therefore the child, the fruit of the acid father and base mother. Father, mother and child – this is the basic family unit, and various families can be formed on this model: wisdom, love and truth; intellect, heart and will; thought, feeling and action; light, heat and movement; acid, base and salt. In effect, truth is the child of wisdom and love, will is the child of light and heat, and salt is the child of an acid and a base. And in alchemy we find this same family, comprised of sulphur, mercury and salt.
