As it evaporates into the atmosphere, water is purified, because the different layers through which it passes act as filters. And according to treatises on alchemy, when this water is finally ready, the universal Spirit fertilizes it during the night, impregnating it with its quintessence. This is why dew is more potent in its effects than ordinary water. It is dew that feeds and waters the plants of desert regions where not a drop of rain falls for months at a time. We usually think of dew at the end of its journey, when it falls and settles on the earth. But we must not forget that, in order for water to become dew, it must first rise into the atmosphere in the form of vapour, where the universal spirit fertilizes it in passing. It is because this water has first risen that, when it condenses and falls to earth again, it is the bearer of all life-giving elements.
