Valleys, springs, chasms, waterfalls, lakes, and snow are all rich in symbolic significance; they all correspond to the realities of our inner life. Those who meditate on a mystical or philosophical truth climb an inner mountain, for that truth brings them closer to heaven, and they are washed and vivified by the water that rises and flows within them. Striving to scale the highest peak means to cherish a high ideal, to cultivate the noblest thoughts and feelings. Falling into a chasm means following and be swallowed up by our basest and most ignoble tendencies. But peaks and chasms are closely related: the higher the peaks, the deeper the chasms. This is another truth worth meditating on.
