Suffering is painful, of course, and we naturally try to avoid it. But if we did not suffer, we would never make the decision to transform ourselves. And since it is impossible to avoid suffering, instead of rebelling against it we must understand its usefulness, for it is a fire that burns away impurities. It is imperative to understand this property of fire: it never destroys anything which is of the same nature as itself. When it penetrates man, it burns only his impurities. Matter which is pure is not consumed; it resists fire and becomes luminous, because it vibrates in unison with fire. This is the matter that forms our body of glory, our body of light, of which the Scriptures speak. When an initiate succeeds in lighting the divine fire within himself, he sets the matter of his being ablaze and shines like a sun.
