Humans have needs of all kinds, nature being so rich in possibilities! Their greatest pleasure is in satisfying their instinctive needs, and it’s understandable, it’s an innate tendency. But if this tendency is not directed and controlled by reasoning and wisdom, it cannot be justified. It is legitimate as an impulse but not legitimate in all the ways it is expressed, so it should not be given complete freedom to achieve what it wants. Eating, drinking, enjoying oneself, amassing money and possessions, exerting power over others, tasting the pleasures of love, even debauchery: these are the instinctive forces that move human beings. They are not bad of themselves, but they become bad when they don’t allow for the other factor, reasoning, to play a part in deciding how much they should be given free rein or how much, on the contrary, they should be curbed.
