Four is the number of purification, and since it is the number of purification, it is also the number of suffering, for suffering is often the only means of purification. When you suffer, it means that heaven is putting you through the mesh of a strainer. The number four is that of purity, suffering and limitation: that of limitation on the physical plane (notice how a square conveys an impression of confinement, of being hemmed in, imprisoned even), that of suffering on the astral plane, and that of purity on the mental plane. We are confined and we suffer within the prison of our physical bodies, but we suffer in order to be purified. Once we are pure, we shall be free, we shall be released from our prison.
