Let us say you have met a person for whom you feel sympathy,…

Let us say you have met a person for whom you feel sympathy, friendship, and even love... and these sentiments are reciprocated. If you want them to last, you must learn to temper their manifestations. A lack of moderation is always fatal, even in the best circumstances. Of course, we are immediately tempted to give free rein to our affection, letters, meetings, gifts, kisses, and so on. But it is too much. Right away we have indigestion, as if we have eaten too much, and at the first opportunity we reject each other. To sustain harmonious relationships throughout our lives with those we appreciate, those we love, we must be measured; otherwise, even with the best people in the world, they cannot last. These are psychological subtleties you must understand in order to safeguard good relations.
