The intellect and heart are complementary faculties. The intellect has light and can therefore observe, study and inform, while the heart, which has warmth, provides an impetus to act and move things forward. The image of a boat gives us a simple idea of the complementary functions of intellect and heart. High up on the bridge is the captain, who sees, determines the direction and gives the orders. Down below in the hold are the engineers. They cannot see anything, but they are responsible for the boat’s propulsion, and, if they refuse to obey, the boat does not move. If the boat is to advance safely and on course, everyone – the captain and the engineers – must work together. Such are the nature and role of the intellect and heart: the intellect is superior in terms of vision, and the heart in terms of impetus.
