More often than not, human consciousness serves merely as a screen on which every instinct and tendency inherited from the animal realm is projected. This is why the disciple who decides to commit himself to the path of initiation must expect some surprises. He wants to pray, to be good and pure, but another voice begins to shout within him: 'Oh no, not that! I want something else...' So the poor disciple often capitulates. But if, in spite of everything, he continues to struggle against his lower impulses, he gradually succeeds in liberating himself. Celestial beings notice his efforts and come to his aid; his consciousness broadens and becomes enlightened, and it can be said that he begins to live in his superconsciousness. This does not mean that he will be permanently sheltered from the forces of the subconscious, but if he continues his efforts, in time a barrier will be established between them and him, and at this point he will be truly out of their reach.
