We are inhabited by inner voices which give us all kinds of …

We are inhabited by inner voices which give us all kinds of suggestions, supposedly for our own good. In reality, if we listen to them we are lost, for these voices do not come from the world of light. A Bulgarian tale illustrates this truth well. A man who was guilty of all sorts of crimes was finally caught and sentenced to hang. As the rope was placed around his neck, the devil appeared to him and asked: ‘Do you see anything over there? -No. -Take a closer look. -I can make out some mules. -What are they carrying on their backs? -It looks like sandals, lots of sandals. -That’s right, said the devil, those are all the sandals I’ve worn out leading you to the gallows.’ Those who are unable to resist all the inner voices trying to mislead them will end up at the gallows. Once they have arrived, the devil will show them all the sandals he has worn out getting them there. And it will be useless to blame him, for people are always responsible for their own actions.
