People admit they need instruction when it comes to …
People admit they need instruction when it comes to preparing for a manual, artistic or intellectual profession, but they reject the idea that they have anything whatsoever to learn about the conduct of their inner life. With this attitude they run serious risks. They want to know nothing of the experiences and teachings of the spiritual masters, and they sever their ties with these living books which could reveal what is essential to them. They should not be surprised if they eventually find themselves at an impasse and fate deals them a few blows. It is very important to have a living master or to be linked with the masters of the past. Through our relationship with these beings, who have had so much more experience than we have and have drawn so many lessons from it, we are impregnated with their knowledge. We live our lives, we act, and in each instance something higher and richer than we are comes to join in our experience and help us.
