We must not be overly preoccupied with questions concerning …

We must not be overly preoccupied with questions concerning the existence of beauty and ugliness, virtue and vice, strength and weakness. What is important is to learn how to live with these two poles, these opposite aspects of the one. Instead, human beings never cease to wonder why God allows evil to exist. They must stop asking this kind of question. Good and evil are intimately connected, and as complementary poles they have to deal with each other. Our existence on earth is completely conditioned by the alternate succession of day and night, and this alternation which regulates life throughout nature, regulates our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual life as well. We would not know what light is if there were no darkness, nor would we know wisdom, justice, or joy if we did not to come up against foolishness, injustice, ugliness and sadness. It is through comparison and confrontation that understanding comes about. If opposites did not exist, we would live in a world without differentiation.
