Pleasure should never be a criterion in what you do, or you …
Pleasure should never be a criterion in what you do, or you should at least be aware that it is insufficient as a criterion. Why? Because the things human beings usually enjoy, mostly feed their instincts rather than their soul and their spirit. And you only have to look at where they find their pleasure to see that this is so, the possibilities are endless: eating, drinking, seducing women or men, gambling, living in luxury, exercising power, seeking revenge, and so forth. But where does all this lead them? In seeking pleasure human beings think only of themselves, of their own pleasure. They do not seek the pleasure of others, only theirs. And in doing so they thwart and degrade themselves because in order to obtain this pleasure and protect it, they are often obliged to resort to foul methods. They become demanding and unjust, and if at some time they are deprived from this pleasure, they become irritable, aggressive and vindictive. They become unbearable and people on the receiving end soon show their displeasure. What satisfaction can possibly be gained from all that?
