Imagine a young musician playing a new piece from sight. If he doesn’t pay great attention, he will make a few mistakes, and once these have been made they will be imprinted in him as stereotypes: if he is not very careful he will make the same mistakes in the same places even twenty or thirty years later, even when he knows the piece by heart, and it will take a great deal of time and effort to correct them! That is why, when a musician is sight-reading a new piece, he must take all the time he needs to create perfect stereotypes. One day he will even be able to eat and sleep while he plays and not make a single mistake, because everything will be imprinted perfectly in his subconscious. What is true for music is equally true for many other activities in life. When you begin with great care and wisdom you avoid making mistakes, and you therefore save time, energy and effort.
