When a baby comes into the world, it emerges from its mother’s womb head first. Why is this? You have also noticed that people dive into the water – an element denser than air – head down, but when they come up for air they resurface head up. A baby comes into this world head down because, like the spirit which descends from on high, it plunges into the denser regions of matter. The position of the infant is therefore symbolic: it indicates that the spirit is being engulfed in matter. On the contrary, when a human being dies, he leaves a very dense region and enters a subtler one, like the diver who comes up for air. Birth is therefore a form of death: when a baby is born, it dies in the subtle realms. And when someone dies on earth, he is born on high.
