Height, depth and width: these three dimensions correspond …

Height, depth and width: these three dimensions correspond to the development of the human being. Height is linked to thought, depth to feeling and width to activity. So we should not speak of profound thoughts but of elevated thoughts, nor of elevated feelings but of deep ones. As for activity, it must be broad and vast. During its growth, a tree develops in these three directions in succession. To begin with, the seed gives birth to a root, which goes down deep into the soil. The longer the root and the deeper it goes, the taller and broader the tree will be. Next, the trunk is formed and gradually gains in height. Once the depth of the roots and the height of the trunk have been established, the tree spreads its branches wide. Human beings must grow the same way a tree does. They can only elevate their thoughts after deepening their feelings, and once their thoughts have become elevated they will be able to extend their activity outwards.
