In the same way that nature is subject to the alternate …

In the same way that nature is subject to the alternate occurrence of phenomena, our inner life is subject to alternation, from night to day, flux and reflux: our consciousness is lit up and then it grows dark, it fills up and then it empties. And since this is so, we should try to foresee the time when each of these phenomena will occur. Suppose then that the difficult period approaches and you have not foreseen it, you will have made plans and committed to appointments, but when the time comes you will have no energy or inspiration left and you will feel helpless and distraught. Well, you could have prevented these problems if you had been able to anticipate the days when you would be feeling tired and run down. All mistakes are made in times of darkness, those times when our consciousness has darkened. Learn to recognize those moments and at such times take things gently and undertake nothing new.
