One day someone was telling me about his difficulties with a friend: following a misunderstanding, their relations had deteriorated, and the hostile attitude of his one-time friend hurt him deeply. My visitor explained to me: 'I really wish things could be arranged. Every day I pray and ask God to help me. I concentrate and work with my thoughts, but I see no improvement.' After listening to him for a moment, I said: 'All that activity is magnificent! But why call on all the heavenly powers to help with such a small problem which you could perfectly well settle yourself? A friendly look, a few words, a generous gesture is all it would take for this person to understand that you are still his friend. You want to disturb the Lord - which is a very difficult undertaking - and ask Him to solve your problems. Try instead to use the very simple means He has put at your disposal: a look, a word, a gesture...'
