Jesus said: ‘He who believes in me will also do the works …

Jesus said: ‘He who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these…’ If he himself had been God, do you think he could have told human beings they would do works greater than God’s? Why wasn’t this sentence removed from the Gospels? If people really wanted to maintain this belief in Jesus as ‘the only son of God’, and therefore God himself, they should have suppressed it! Through his words and his example, Jesus came to make human beings conscious of their divine heritage. But how does the Church expect people to be inspired by this example, when, by claiming he is God, it has created an immeasurable distance between them and Jesus? The Church’s task was to clarify the teaching of Jesus, to show that we exist only because we are inhabited by the divine, and that our mission is to draw ever closer to this divinity within us.
