If all you desire is to live an ordinary, mundane, …

If all you desire is to live an ordinary, mundane, insignificant life, you can let yourself go; it is pointless to be vigilant and to make efforts to gain control yourself and master your instincts. This self-control would even be detrimental to your physical and mental health. You would become insufferable for your family and everyone around you; your frustration would make you bitter, harsh and intolerant. For your vigilance and self-mastery to have an ultimate purpose, you must have a very high ideal. You must want to make something great of your life, something beautiful and noble, and you must feel the need to add another element to it, an element of spirituality, of light. Otherwise, your efforts will get you nowhere.
