Human beings need teachers to keep them from wandering …

Human beings need teachers to keep them from wandering aimlessly along the roads of life. But once they have been taught and enlightened, it is up to them to set to work and make their own experiences. Let us take a very simple example: you have been given a recipe by an excellent chef and you have all the ingredients, which you have bought in the best shops. If you do not decide to go into your kitchen and prepare the dish, you will have nothing to eat. And if you carry on like that for a long time, you will end up dying of hunger. Well, the same applies in spiritual life. Once you have found the right path and you have before you the best examples, you must rely only on yourself. What other people have acquired is theirs; it is now up to you to make your own acquisitions. So do not be satisfied merely with saying that Moses, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, or anyone else is your master, but set to work.
