No other human failing gives rise to so much disappointment …

No other human failing gives rise to so much disappointment and misfortune as the stubborn defence of certain beliefs and points of view without testing their validity. People persist in thinking they are right, even when all sorts of events in their daily lives prove the opposite. How can they put up with such contradictions? It is the events of life, not your own imagination, tastes, or preferences that should show you whether or not your view of things is correct. I have given you all the criteria you need to see this clearly, and the most important is this one: before reaching a decision on any matter whatsoever, try to identify what it is in yourself that urges you to take one direction rather than another. Are your motives honest and disinterested? If not, watch out, because you are exposing yourself to great disillusionment.
