For those who have embraced the spiritual life, the greatest difficulty lies not so much in reaching a higher level of consciousness as in maintaining it. One day they win a victory over themselves, but the next day when the inner or outer conditions have changed they let themselves go a bit. You ought to know, it’s almost impossible to maintain permanence and stability on the spiritual heights. Stability is the culminating point of initiation, the moment when the disciple can finally say, like the hierophants of ancient Egypt, ‘I am stable, son of stable, conceived and engendered in the territory of stability.’ The territory of stability is the sephira Binah, the region of the Twenty-four Elders. Even if stability is an inaccessible summit, link yourself to this sephira, and it will help you draw closer to it.
