Music, like words, is a language, but a language that …

Music, like words, is a language, but a language that addresses itself to different faculties. Words speak mainly to our intelligence and demand attention and concentration if we are to understand them. Music creates an ambience; it does not present a subject for reflection but gives rise to immediate sensations. It therefore speaks more to the heart, to our sensibility, which is another form of understanding. In a certain way, words also touch our sensibility, but only secondarily; above all, they address our intelligence, and we must first understand their meaning before we experience an emotion. It is important that you regularly devote time in your life to these two forms of language – words and music – so that you develop the two faculties of reflection and sensibility in a harmonious way.
