You think someone you are close to is acting badly… If you think you need to intervene, do not begin by acting harshly towards them, but explain to them how they should act from now on, in their own and others’ interest. If they don’t understand, try to touch their heart. And if that method doesn’t work either, you then have the right to be severe. That is how a spiritual master acts. When he sees someone is not behaving properly, he begins by explaining things to them, and he waits. If he sees that the other person doesn’t understand and is taking no notice of what has been explained, he tries to touch their heart. If this method doesn’t work either, only then does he take more severe measures. We are justified in being severe only if we have tried other methods first. If we are harsh to begin with, people have the right to reproach us for our harshness, and we will gain nothing.
