Jesus said, ‘Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it.’ This narrow gate that gives access to the kingdom of God is that of Initiation. Initiation is an asceticism that teaches people how to rid themselves of their weaknesses and all their base tendencies. It can be compared to the opening through which a snake passes when it must shed its skin. Disciples are those who are preparing to pass through the narrow gate that will remove their old skin, that is to say, their false conceptions and pernicious tendencies. Each of you must pass through this narrow gate, and instead of being anxious and fearful, rejoice that, thanks to this, you will become a new person with new thoughts, feelings and behaviour worthy of a true son or true daughter of God. It may be said that during their lifetime, human beings pass through three gates. All people pass through that of birth and that of death, whatever their degree of evolution. However, only those capable of accomplishing a great work of purification and detachment can pass through the third gate, that of Initiation.
