To act is to unleash forces - To act is to release forces
To act is to release forces. So, think carefully before you act, because once these forces are unleashed, they will not stop in mid-flight; they will go all the way. You are up on a mountain, and there you see a huge boulder ready to tumble down the slope: it is up to you whether you leave it alone or cause it to fall. If you set it in motion, there is no stopping it—it will crush you and many others along with you. Or, if you open lock gates, see if you can then stop the flood of water! You are master of whether you act or not, but the moment you decide to act, the forces you unleash are out of your hands. When agitators provoke a riot, they quickly lose control. Hence the saying, ‘Sow the wind and reap the whirlwind,’ and that storm could carry away the very person who started it. Before you say a word, give someone a look, write a letter, or give the signal for war, you have absolute power, but afterwards, it is too late: you become a mere spectator, and often even the victim.*
