Many mothers simply relent when their child cries and in …

Many mothers simply relent when their child cries and in the end give him what he asks for, even if it is unreasonable. Do they ever consider that this child will be so used to having people give in to him that as an adult he will prove to be fickle, violent and unscrupulous? Mothers must always be full of kindness. They must not get angry or hit their children, but when necessary they must appear uncompromising, in precisely the same way that nature remains implacable in the face of human suffering. If a child puts his finger into the fire or ice, the laws of heat and cold do not change on his account. Nature is an impassive witness to the child’s experience, which is why he learns to respect her. A mother represents nature for her child, and, if she does not represent her correctly, the child will not know there are boundaries he must not cross, and he will be lost.
