Space is not something vague and undefined. It is subject to a structure which corresponds to the number 4: the four cardinal points. And in a certain sense the human being, who is a microcosm created in the image of the macrocosm, is also constructed according to the number 4. When we extend our arms, we create a horizontal line which bisects the vertical line that extends from head to foot, and here we find the four directions of space. You will ask: ‘But is the head north or east?’ This does not matter. When we lose control of our thoughts, we say we have lost our bearings or true north. But we can also say we are disoriented. And since the orient is the east where the sun rises, east and north are symbolically identical in meaning.
