It is in argument, confrontation and the debate of ideas …

It is in argument, confrontation and the debate of ideas that the intellect is in its element and develops. Our applause and our expressions of admiration and kindness have the same effect on it as warmth does: they put it to sleep. The intellect needs the cold, in other words criticisms and obstacles, to overcome. This is why difficulties and ordeals are useful: they shake us up and force us to react. Do you really think you would make much effort to become more reflective, more prudent and clear-sighted, if you were not compelled to do so? As for pleasant events and tokens of friendship, these influence the heart, encouraging it to become generous, loving and warm. But whether an event is pleasant or difficult, try to observe which faculties it affects in you, so that you know how best to work in either case.
