If the Bible and all of humanity’s sacred books were ever …
If the Bible and all of humanity’s sacred books were ever to disappear, they could be recovered, because they originate in the one true book, the Book of Life, that is, the universe and human beings themselves, who are the guardians of God’s word. The word of God conveyed by sacred writings is not a word in the usual sense. God has never addressed human beings in a human language in order to reveal himself or give instructions. It is human beings who are able to read, hear or decipher the word of God in nature and in themselves, for the divine Word, the original light, forms the substance of everything that exists. Meditate on the third verse of Genesis: ‘Then God said, let there be light’, and on the first verse of The Gospel According to John, which echoes it: ‘In the beginning was the Word’. Human speech is only a very distant and faint expression of that original light, of that divine Word.
