Most human beings expect life to teach them to know …

Most human beings expect life to teach them to know themselves, and life indeed is well equipped to teach them; but this is very costly in time and money. A more rapid and economical way to know ourselves would be to ask heaven to place each of us before a perfect mirror, that is, before a great being who has no interest in deceiving us or taking advantage of us. Where is such a mirror? In an initiate. Dead or alive is irrelevant: you will still have the opportunity of studying his teachings, and even asking him, 'What is going on in me? Which weaknesses must I fight against, which qualities must I develop?' If ever this mirror starts reflecting a few of your flaws, will you be furious with it? On the contrary, you should thank heaven and say, 'Now that I see clearly my imperfections, I will avoid so many disasters, and I will spare others and myself so many misfortunes!'
