In centuries past, men and women’s honour was based primarily on social values, on values that were therefore external to them. As a result of an unfortunate word or gesture, nobles would immediately be obliged to fight a duel. This custom and way of seeing things forced men to engage in courageous acts, it is true, but from a moral and spiritual point of view, this concept of honour is deplorable. It does not actually develop nobility and courage but serves primarily to protect social prestige, which in reality is of little importance. True nobility consists in seeking more intelligent solutions through reconciliation. But this first requires a great deal of inner work: the offended party must understand that no hostility, no accusation can diminish him in the eyes of God. If he is innocent, neither accusations nor slander can in any way change what he represents for the angels and for God himself.
