Money has tremendous power over human beings’ lower nature. It excites it and eggs it on. ‘Go on, you can do it: ruin this one, oust that one. The woman you desire is married? Do not let that stop you; give her a car or some diamonds, and she’ll soon come round!’ Yes, money gives our lower nature very bad advice; we see it every day. If you really want to know a person, give them a lot of money and see how they behave. If they do not immediately plunge into a round of pleasure, if they do not become vain, demanding, harsh and arrogant, and so forth, then you can be sure that this is a wonderful person on whom you can rely, for they have succeeded in overcoming the temptations money inspires.
