Only one part of us is affected by suffering; another part …

Only one part of us is affected by suffering; another part remains inaccessible to it: this is our spirit. For our spirit is free, it observes the situation and is able to remedy it. It says to us, ‘Are you suffering? Well, be glad, because if you’re intelligent you will gain even more lucidity and understanding thanks to your suffering, and you will become stronger.’ Those who are unhappy tend to identify with their unhappiness and allow it to take them over. This is precisely what they shouldn’t do. On the contrary, they should be immediately on the alert and tell themselves, ‘Now there is work to do. You’re suffering, of course, but it’s only a part of you that’s suffering. Call on this other entity that lives in immensity, in eternity; that is also you. At the moment you’re wading about in mud, but from this mud you will see flowers and trees spring up, laden with succulent fruits.’
