To find plenty we must deprive ourselves. Those who are …

To find plenty we must deprive ourselves. Those who are wise have understood this and say: 'I shall deprive myself of these few grains of wheat and I will then be able to harvest thousands of them.' And instead of eating the grains, they sow them and so end up being able to harvest an entire field. The unwise, on the other hand, say: 'Why should I deprive myself? I shall eat them all.' And then after a while they have nothing left and are destitute. We have to eat, but only a little, and sow the rest. Of course the grains I am referring to here are symbolic. They are our thoughts and our feelings, which we must learn to sow. Our thoughts and feelings can work for the good of everyone, provided they are not eaten, in other words, that they are not put into the service of our selfish interests. People who are able to deprive themselves, reap such abundant harvests that they not only never want for anything, but they can also feed the entire world.
