The human condition is such that it is often impossible to say whether it is a happy one or an unhappy one, as this anecdote of the good old days demonstrates: two friends meet up again after many years and one says to the other: 'My goodness, you are looking very smart; what have you been doing with yourself these past few years? - I got married. - That's great, you must be very happy. - Not really, my wife is a bit of a shrew. - How unfortunate. - Not really, she had a dowry of two thousand crowns. - Well, that's great. - No, not really. I used the money to buy some sheep and they all died. - That's terrible. - No, it wasn't as bad as you think; I earned far more by selling the fleeces. - So in the end you came out on top? - Well, not really, because I used the money to buy a house and the house burned down. - My poor friend, you really have had it bad. - Not really. My wife was killed in the fire, so I'm rid of her now.' This is the human condition in a nutshell: subjected to situations which one is never quite sure whether they are favourable are not.
