A gardener has a selection of seeds. He sows them and can predict with certainty that he will harvest lettuces, radishes, and so on. His predictions come true because his knowledge is based on study and experience. But where their beliefs are concerned, many people are like gardeners who expect a harvest when they have sown nothing, or who sow carrot seeds and expect them to grow into leeks. People expect something impossible because they have neither knowledge or experience. They can harvest only what they have sown. So, we must not delude ourselves. If we meet with failure instead of the success we had expected, it means either that we did not sow any seeds, or that we have sown the wrong kind. This is true in every domain, even that of the spiritual life. Why do you think that Jesus so often used the image of the sower?
